Ford Motor Company filed a positively gargantuan sum of new inventions for patent consideration this year: nearly 6,000, a large mix of which related to connected and autonomous vehicles, navigation, ride-sharing, e-bikes, and wearable technology. That ‘s 36 percent greater than those submitted in 2014.
These Ford Motor Company innovations have come from all around the globe; invention disclosure submissions in the Asia Pacific region are up more than 140 percent from three years ago, along with a 100 percent increase in the US, and a 50 percent increase in Europe. “The commitment Ford has made to innovation is commendable,” said Ocean Tomo Chairman and CEO James Malackowski. “The strength of Ford’s patent portfolio has resulted in the company being named a constituent to the Ocean Tomo 300 Patent Index for five years.”
Ocean Tomo is an intellectual property firm with headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. The firm compiles an annual list of the top 300 companies based on intellectual property value.
Many of Ford Motor Company’s hottest areas for innovation pertain to the automaker’s Smart Mobility plan, and its ongoing commitment to fuel efficiency and electrification. Ford’s electrification patent filings have increased nearly 200 percent over the last 5 years, and the company currently has some 275 patents on EcoBoost technology, with 200 more pending.
Says Ford Executive VP of Global Product Development Raj Nair: “Our engineers and scientists are inventing ways to address mobility challenges more than ever – with more patent applications filed this year on car-sharing, wearables, bikes, cloud computing and in other areas to improve consumers’ lives inside and outside the car.”
