The all-wheel drive 2016 Ford Focus RS was made to be driven, come hell or high water – er, snow.
That’s why Ford has announced that a spare set of 18-inch wheels with versatile snow tires will be available as a factory accessory with the new Ford Focus RS, making the hot-hatch North America’s first car ever to offer such an option. “We started this project knowing what our RS customers really want out of their cars,” said Ford Performance Chassis Supervisor Adam Wirth. “This tire package allows RS owners to continue spirited driving even in the snow.”
The Ford Focus RS’ Winter Wheel & Tire Package consists of four, 18-inch wheels measuring 7.5 inches deep, wrapped in Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4. Before this, says Ford, winter-only tire performance standards had never been authored. Creating the new accessory package for the 2016 Ford Focus RS necessitated penning a new set of standards tailored just for winter conditions, honed in the harsh weather of Sweden and northern Michigan.
The total diameter of this Winter Wheel & Tire Package is smaller to allow for the use of snow chains, and the narrower wheel width provides improved snow traction (weight is spread over less surface area). “We fully expect our more extreme-weather customers to take advantage of the ability to use snow chains,” said Adam Wirth.
The 2016 Ford Focus RS’ optional Winter Wheel & Tire Package will be a $1,995 option in the US.
