Ford Police Interceptor Vehicles Can Withstand Heavy Gunfire

Ford is doing more to keep our men and women in police uniform safe, by offering Type IV ballistic protection on its Police Interceptor sedan and utility. This is the first time such protection has been offered on pursuit-rated vehicles in the US.

Type IV ballistic protection is a specification that pertains to .30 caliber armor-piercing rounds. Type III ballistic protection had already been optional on Ford’s Police Interceptor sedan and utility, rated against all handgun and non-piercing rounds up to .30 caliber, plus special threat rounds specified by the LAPD. Those panels utilize ballistic-grade ceramic tiles to break up rounds on impact, and a fiber piece to catch the resulting shrapnel.

“The fact that we design our Police Interceptors around officer feedback is what has made them number one,” says Ford Police Interceptor Chief Engineer Arie Groeneveld. “Officers globally told us they needed protection from armor piercing ammunition and we added increased ballistic protection to an already great product – that’s continuous innovation.”
