If you’re a resident of the US, we can see no compelling reason why you should need to concern yourself with the video above, wherein Carfection reviews the diesel-powered version of the Ford Focus ST.
Nonetheless, we recommend giving it a watch, as it presents an informative take on the petrol vs. diesel dilemma.
While slapping a diesel engine into the sporty Ford Focus ST will surely ruffle the feathers of some – in much the same way as offering an M Sport package on a sparkless BMW might – this car isn’t without its merits. At 8.3 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph), the Ford Focus ST diesel won’t break any records, but nor is it a slouch, and its turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel produces a mighty 295 lb-ft of torque with 182 horsepower.
With that, one also gets all (or at least, most) of the handling genius of the petrol-powered Ford Focus ST, on top of almost 70 miles to the gallon in mixed driving. While it may lack the peppy character and satisfying sound of the petrol-fuelled ST hot-hatch – the sole offering here in the States – the added fuel economy and mountains of torque ensure that it manages to gratify in its own right.
