Years ago, Ford and General Motors entered into an agreement which would see the two companies design new 9- and 10-speed automatic transmissions for joint use. The 9-speed unit, whose development was led by GM, was to be formatted for front-wheel drive applications; the 10-speed, with development headed up by Ford, was designed for rear-wheel drive vehicles.
After being confirmed for deployment in the 2017 Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, it seems that the new Ford-GM 10-speed automatic might find its way into the Ford Mustang. According to Mustang6g, the 10-speed unit (codenamed “10R80”) was listed on the standard Ford dealership parts database, although it wasn’t attributed to any particular model year of Ford Mustang. A screenshot on the website confirms the transmission’s presence in the system.
It’s uncertain when the new 10-speed automatic might actually appear on the Ford Mustang, or what specific models it might grace, but Mustang6g suspects it might appear in time for the 2018 model year. We’ll have more information as this story develops.
