The rivalry between the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro is one as old as time. Go to the Lascaux caves in southwestern France and on the walls you’ll find crude, Paleolithic depictions of the two pony cars having it out in the quarter-mile, while rows of bison watch from the bleachers.
Naturally, the Mustang / Camaro rivalry has been on full display throughout all ten editions of Car and Driver‘s “Lightning Lap” track-test feature. So, having just wrapped up the 2016 chapter in the ongoing saga, Car and Driver decided to publish an online piece summarizing all the different Camaro and Mustang models that have contended to best one another over the years.
The story begins with the 2006 Ford Mustang GT at Lightning Lap 1, which made its way around Virginia International Raceway in 3:20.9, and concludes with Lightning Lap 8, and the 2014 Camaro Z/28 that remains the certifiable king of the pony car realm (for now) with a time of 2:50.9. This year, the 2016 Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang came very close to dethroning the discontinued Z/28, coming up just 0.9 seconds short (while still being arguably the more “special” of the two cars).
Be sure to stop by Car and Driver for the full Lightning Lap Camaro / Mustang rivalry, played out over a 19-point slideshow.
