Ford Motor Company has filed an application to register Model T as a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Ford Authority has discovered.
Filed on December 30th, 2016, the application is assigned serial number 87285391 and specifies that the mark will be used in conjunction with “automobiles”.
The Ford Authority Take
The legendary status of the Model T name makes this trademark filing peculiar, if not highly intriguing. Though we don’t know whether the filing hints at a future Ford vehicle called Model T, it is worth noting that the automaker filed an application for Model E in December 2013, and rumors point to the name being reserved for a range of upcoming electric or electrified vehicles.
We will keep our ears to the ground on this one, so be sure to following Ford Model T news and general Ford news right here at Ford Authority.

How can they apply to trademark something that has been in the public domain for decades?? Think I’ll see if I can trademark “Wheelbarrow”!
Because this is in reference to the specific product/service category described in the article, namely “automobiles”. The public domain reference is in regards to the copyright… not the trademark or name.
Maybe a unibody truck to compete with the Honda Ridgeline? Just a thought.
