Ford SYNC 3 Adds Integration For ExxonMobil ‘Speedpass+’ App

Ford Motor Company has become the first automaker to offer in-vehicle integration for ExxonMobil’s “Speedpass+” app, which offers motorists a hassle-free method to pay for gas from their smartphones.

And now, from their Ford’s SYNC 3 touchscreen, as well.

The Speedpass+ app itself is an evolution of the Speedpass keychain device, which allowed users to authorize electronic payments at Exxon and Mobil gas pumps with an easy-to-use electronic fob.

“ExxonMobil’s use of mobile technology that makes life more convenient for their customers can be easily integrated into Ford vehicles,” says Ford Global Manager of Mobile Applications and Emergency Services Dave Hatton. “With SYNC AppLink, the Speedpass+ experience becomes a more seamless part of our customers’ journey.”

Now, Speedpass+ users driving SYNC 3-equipped Ford vehicles need only pull up to an Exxon or Mobil gas pump and tap a few on-screen items to authorize payment, without ever leaving the car. The vehicle’s GPS system automatically recognizes when the driver is at a participating gas station. Voice commands are also available.

Users can also use the Speedpass+ app to search for nearby stations, and when the fuel gauge on an integrated Ford vehicle with SYNC 3 drops below a certain threshold, participating ExxonMobil stations in the area will show up on the SYNC 3 screen automatically.
