The People’s Republic of California, notorious for its strict emissions regulations, approved the Ford F-250 hybrid by XL, a hybrid truck outfitter, for legal sale in the state.
With this certification, XL obtained the right to sell the Ford F-250 hybrid in Massachusetts, the District of Columbia, and 11 other states that follow the California CARB emissions mandate.
In addition to the Ford F-250 hybrid, XL says the Ford Transit passenger and cargo vans, Ford E-350 and 450 cutaways, and stripped chassis received approval from the California Air Resources Board. The new green technology in the Ford F-250 hybrid, according to XL, can improve the pickup’s fuel economy by 25 percent.
While XL highlights its fuel efficiency, it is important to note that the emissions standards for heavy-duty pickup trucks are considerably lower than smaller vehicles. The news from XL is incremental progress in electrifying the commercial light duty truck space.
Like many hybrid vehicles (including luxury brands), the Ford F-250 hybrid comes equipped with a lithium-ion battery and an electric motor. This motor, however, is connected to the transmission, thus generating more torque.
Buyers are now free to order the Ford F-250 hybrid from any Ford dealer, in any configuration. The XL Ford F-250 hybrid maintains its factory warranty, as well as a 36,000 mile/3-year warranty on its electrified components.
