2020 Ford Explorer Platinum Spied Nearly Naked

The 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum has been spied testing with minimal camouflage on, revealing some interesting exterior details well ahead of the SUV’s likely debut in Detroit next month.

The 2020 Explorer looks like the current explorer if all of its fat were peeled back, in our opinion. There’s less sheet metal out front, with much of the fascia populated by the familiar Ford grille, angled headlamps and lower intake grille. Beneath the lower intake sits a silver protective cover that looks a bit like a skid plate, but were apprehensive to call it that as it’s looks like it’s made of plastic. Occupying the middle of the fascia are a set of LED fog lights, which we imagine will be standard on the well-equipped Explorer Platinum.

Also present on this 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum prototype are twin five-spoke alloy wheels and protective black plastic lower body cladding with a chrome decorative trim strip running just below the doors. From the side, the next-generation Explorer looks quite a bit like the current model, sporting a near identical silhouette and the same “invisible” D-pillar.

Moving out back we can see a quad-tip exhaust surrounded by decorative silver trim, C-shaped LED taillights and a rear hatch spoiler. There’s also a decorative brush silver trim piece about halfway up the tailgate with large ‘Explorer’ lettering. The rear camera can be seen mounted just below the silver trim piece as well.

The 2020 Explorer is expected to be based on Ford’s new CD6 global platform. Base models will be rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive to be offered as an option. This is essentially the same platform that the new 2020 Lincoln Aviator rides on, although we imagine the Ford version of the platform will be a bit less premium in various aspects. It’s hard to say what could be store for the Explorer powertrain wise, but Ford’s 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine should be in the cards, along with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder for base models. Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission should appear as well.

Look for the 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum to make its debut in the coming months.

Sedans and coupes are not selling as well as crossovers and SUV’s. Also, I know its all just opinion, but how is a 365hp 410tq AWD Explorer not exciting? Its going to scoot like non other.

Yes, sedans and coupes are only selling millions. No market there. My Fusion Sport will blow away the Edge Sport and Explorer. Boring to nth degree. Big fat overblown station wagons.

nobody makes you buy it. Like sedans? So who does not allow you to ride them? buy and ride on these same Germans, Koreans and Japanese. Sedan is too small for some families. I bought 2017 Explorer 2 years ago and i love this car. I do not understand people who leaves such comments, being the owners of sedans.

It is difficult to some people to comprehend that Americans want to buy American cars. I really don’t care that you have an Explorer, because your vehicle is boring, a road hog, and wastes gas is not a concern of mine. I don’t understand why some people are not bright, and cannot see the real problem. That is American car companies giving up the American car market to foreign manufacturers.

but all this post about Explorer, right? Not about what americans want or you. I really dont care that you have fusion. Some people like sedans, other like minivans, trucks, suv, etc. Gas usage is not problem for me. 25-26 mpg on highway is not bad. This post as i said not about world problems and not about why car companies do this or this. It is all about Explorer. How many Explorers you had?

you don’t like this car, your choice. But Explorer is best selling SUV in America in this class SUVs for 25 years. Does it make sense? Yes it does. People like this family SUV.
Dude do you really think i brought up foreign cars? I live in USA and i bought American car. I love Ford, doesn’t matter what others say or think about it. I am not from east European country. I am from middle Asia, but it doesn’t matter where i am from.
And it is really strange that in topic about Ford Explorer you are talking about foreign cars. If you don’t like this model why does it bother you so much that you still write about it?
