Competitive Sales Comparison
Ford Edge sales performance puts it in third place out of a total of nine rivals in terms of overall Q4 2018 sales volume. The Toyota Highlander dominated the segment, posting an 11 percent increase with 63,812 units sold while the Jeep Grand Cherokee (see Jeep Grand Cherokee sales) was the runner up with 58,255 units sold, though its sales volume fell 2 percent.
The Edge came in third, thereby outselling all other segment contenders including the Hyundai Santa Fe, GMC Acadia (see GMC Acadia Sales), Kia Sorento, Nissan Murano, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Chevrolet Blazer (see Chevrolet Blazer sales). It’s worth noting that the Chevrolet Blazer – the Edge’s newest and most direct rival – recorded 27 deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2018 since it was only available for a few days prior to the close of the quarter.
The mainstream midsize crossover segments, comprised of CUVs with a starting price in the vicinity of $30,000, saw sales decrease 6 percent in Q4 2018 and decreased nearly 2 percent during the complete 2018 calendar year.

The Ford Authority Take
The decline in Ford Edge sales is rather concerning considering current market trends, which strongly favor crossovers and SUVs over traditional sedans.
We attribute the drop in Ford Edge sales volume due to competitive pressures of newer and more attractive offerings from Hyundai. The chain of events is certainly disappointing given the opportunity that exists in the mainstream midsize crossover space. We hope that the refreshed 2019 Ford Edge will give the model what is necessary to overcome those circumstances.
