Ford Motor Company has filed a trademark application for the term Mach 1, Ford Authority has uncovered.

Assigned serial number 88485615 and filed on June 24th, 2019, the filing indicates that it will be used in conjunction with the following goods and services:

  • Land motor vehicles, namely, automobiles and their engines
  • Vehicle rooftop carriers
  • Spare tire covers
  • Fitted motor vehicle covers
  • Bug deflectors for motor vehicles

What, exactly, Ford is planning for the Mach 1 name is unclear at this time, as Dearborn-based automaker has been keeping it a very well-hidden secret.

But rumors have swirled that The Blue Oval is planning to use the Mach 1 name on an upcoming fully electric or electrified vehicle, potentially on a variant of the Ford Mustang. Meanwhile, other rumors have pointed to the Mach 1 name being used on an upcoming electric crossover utility vehicle. No matter what the plan is for the Mach 1 name, here’s to hoping that the name will grace a vehicle worthy of the moniker.
