Aussies love Ford power and the Mustang GT in particular. The latest gen of the Mustang has proven to be quite the stunner when it comes to making power on the stock motor. An Australian outfit called Northmead Auto Center is building up a 2018 Mustang GT, and the crew is looking to run 10s using a Ford 5.0-liter V8 engine that is all stock on the inside.
The same crew that made an insane 1060 horsepower at the wheels using 16 psi of boost on their stock engine 2015 Mustang. The only mod that engine needed was billet oil pump gears. With the turbos bolted on, that Mustang put down a 9.1-second quarter mile pass at 151 mph on stock suspension and at full-weight.
That means the car was essentially a regular street car. The next goal for the crew with the 2018 Mustang GT is to get the car to run a 10-second pass at full weight on stock suspension, and naturally aspirated. They have already succeeded in getting the car to run an 11.1-second pass at 126 mph on a stock motor and full weight using an E85 tune for the engine and a tune for the transmission.
The gang thinks the 2018 Mustang can do the deed thanks to the new 10-speed automatic and the 5.0-liter V8 engine offering both port and direct injection, something the 2015 motor lacked. One big place for improvements was headers, Northmead’s tuner noted that the stock headers were very restrictive.
Right now the team says if it can get the 60-foot time down the Mustang would be a 10-second car. It feels it will have the tune solid in the coming months. At that point, they say that a customer could drive in with a stock 2018 or newer Mustang and drive out $9,000 lighter running 10s at the strip. Check out the special package Aussies can get for the 2020 Mustang.
