Ford Korea sales decreased 85 percent to 112 vehicles in August 2019 compared to August 2018.
Ford sales on an individual model basis were as follows:
- Ford Explorer sales decreased 90.45 percent to 53 units
- Ford Mustang sales decreased 36.56 percent to 59 units
- Ford Taurus sales decreased 100 percent to 0 units
- The vehicle has been discontinued in South Korea
In the first eight months of 2019, Ford Korea sales decreased 28 percent to 4,347 units.

The Ford Authority Take
Ford Korea sales declined drastically in August, representing the worst sales performance the Blue Oval brand has had thus far in 2019, as well as the lowest monthly sales volume in the brand’s contemporary history in South Korea. With this particularly negative performance, Ford’s poor sales performance in South Korea is made ever more profound during the year-to-date timeframe.
The systematic decline of Ford Korea sales over the past few months is primarily due to the drastic reduction in model offerings in the country, which fell from five models offered in 2018 to just two this year – the Explorer and Mustang. Sales of the Explorer, Ford’s largest vehicle in South Korea, plummeted in the past month by 90 percent.
That enabled the Mustang to outsell the Explorer in August, a first for Ford in South Korea. The circumstance is primarily related to significantly reduced availability of the Explorer at the retail level as Ford is in the process of launching the all-new 2020 Explorer.

We expect Ford Korea sales to improve in the next several months as retail availability of the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer improves. However, it’s currently unclear whether Ford has any plans to introduce other new models in South Korea in the near- to medium-term future.
