A Ford lawyer named Beth Rose is a senior attorney at the Ford Office of General Counsel. Two years ago, she formed a resource group for women lawyers called the Legal Alliance of Women (LAW). She says she didn’t know how successful the alliance would be; it has now grown to include 10 law firms in eight countries. The mission for the group is to establish a professional women’s network inspired by the practice of law to empower women at Ford.
The Ford lawyers organization also aims to give back to the community via service and pro bono work. LAW organized events in their local communicates for the homeless, abused, and hungry. In the Detroit area, the Ford lawyers group LAW partnered with First Step a service center for domestic abuse victims that provides temporary housing, legal assistance, and emotional support.
The Ford lawyers group also hosts monthly birthday parties for the battered women and children. The parties are a big deal and were suggested by colleagues that had been homeless at some point. The colleagues said that there was “nothing better” than something that made them feel “normal.” LAW members brought their spouses and children to the birthday parties for women and children who are served by First Step.
The birthday parties that are hosted invite the entire shelter and the First step staff, normally drawing 50 people to attend. LAW also provides free legal services on an international scale with a range of services. The team has drafted wills for firefighters, provided legal immigration advise, and hosted expungement clinics along with representing tenants facing eviction. These activities are going along with Ford Global Day of Service that we talked about last week.
