A few days ago, we reported on what appeared to be a boost gauge mounted to the A-pillar of a 2021 F-150 prototype, which we deduced to be part of a new gauge readout setup for the upcoming fourteenth-generation pickup. We have since learned that this gauge will only be used for testing purposes, and is not intended for production.
We’re fans of A-pillar gauges, so we were certainly excited to see the design utilized with this 2021 Ford F-150 prototype, and hoped to see it make the leap into the production vehicle. Unfortunately, the design isn’t destined for models sold to the public, and is merely in place for engineers to keep tabs on what’s going on under the hood.
As for the production vehicle, buyers should still have the option to configure the main instrument cluster to read boost levels on the fly, providing the info needed for models equipped with Ford’s turbocharged EcoBoost engines.
While we would have preferred the easy-to-read layout of an analogue boost gauge on the A-pillar, we understand Ford’s desire to keep the readout restricted to the primary gauge cluster. Adding an A-pillar pod is a pretty significant change over the current design, and while it’s a popular upgrade in the aftermarket, it’s nearly non-existent in the world of OEMs.
Not that the 2021 F-150 won’t already offer a host of major changes over the current thirteenth-generation 2020 Ford F-150. Previously, we examined the 2021 F-150 prototype with regard to new exterior styling, grille design, headlamp design, and other exterior features, as well as further features inside the cabin space. We also provided an exclusive look at the 2021 F-150 bed, and what the 2021 F-150 will use in terms of the powertrain, including the now-debunked rumor that a new 4.8L V8 would replace the current model’s existing 5.0L Coyote V8.
