Back in October, we mentioned the last of the teams running the Nissan Altima in the Australian Supercars series was ditching those cars in favor of the Supercars Mustang. Kelly Racing was the last team in the Supercars series running a Nissan and left the brand with no cars in the series. At the time, Kelly Racing said that it was moving to the Supercars Mustang and would be cutting its four-car team back to a two-car team.
Kelly has now unveiled the livery for the Mustang that one of its drivers will race in the 2020 Supercars season. The main sponsor of the car is NED Australian whiskey. Kelly Racing will have drivers Rick Kelly and Andre Heimgartner behind the wheel of its two cars. The team has backing from Ford Australia and Ford Performance.
Kelly has announced the team will run its own in-house Ford engine program. The team has announced that it plans to field a pair of Nissan Altimas in the second-tier Super2 series. Interestingly, the Mustang seen in the images here wearing the Kelly Racing livery is a borrowed car. The construction of the two Mustangs the team will field next year isn’t yet complete.
Team owner Todd Kelly says that it is “extremely exciting” to announce the major partnership between his team and NED Whisky for Andre’s Mustang for next season. It’s unclear what livery the second Mustang the team will run will wear. 2019 was a massive year for the Ford Mustang as it won 21 out of 32 races. Kelly Racing finished in eighth place out of the 14 teams in the championship running last season. The team says that its sponsorship with NED Whisky is a multi-year deal.
