Competitive Sales Comparison
The 20 percent increase in U.S. Ford Mustang sales volume in the fourth quarter propelled the perennial pony car to reclaim its rightful place in its segment, outselling the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro. The news is very much welcome for Mustang fans after the Challenger outsold the Mustang during the third quarter of 2019.
By comparison, sales of the Challenger fell about 1 percent to 14,298 units while Camaro sales increased 3 percent to 11,474 units.

From a market share standpoint, the Mustang enjoyed a segment-leading 37 percent share, followed by the Challenger with 31 percent and the Camaro with 21 percent. All other segment contenders saw less than 3 percent segment share.
The mainstream, two-door sports car segment expanded nearly 5 percent to 46,498 units in Q4 2019. In that regard, Ford Mustang sales significantly outpaced the segment during the quarter.
The Ford Authority Take
We posit that Ford Mustang sales outpaced those of the Dodge Challenger in Q4 2019 as a result of FCA scaling back incentives for the Challenger. FCA ran extremely aggressive incentives on the two-door Dodge vehicle during the third quarter of 2019, which we believe enabled the Challenger to outsell the Mustang during the timeframe.
To note, FCA is currently in the process of merging with France’s PSA Group, which runs Peugeot, Citroen, DS Automobiles and Opel brands.

Hello, do you have the sales results for Australia.
Hello John. No, we do not have figures for Australia at the moment… but are hoping to change that in the near future.
Two months ago I bought a new 2019 Camaro and the Mustang was in my sites but I just couldn’t get excited about it. Keeping a sharp eye on the road for what I would like, color, etc., I have to say the younger people love the Mustang. The driver’s generally are younger than the Challenger and Camaro drivers and there is an awful lot of Mustangs in my area. Not sure what it is but could be after market stuff to add on for performance, wheels, exhaust, tuners? I live on the east side of Orlando, Fl six miles from the University of Central Florida, that might have something to do with seeing a lot on the roads around Orlando.
Both the Challenger and Camaro need a redesign, not a refresh, if they want to increase sales against the Mustang.
George – those are solid observations all around. I would add to keep in mind that many vehicles in Florida in the pony/muscle car category (particularly convertibles) are rentals, which tends to skew the observation bit. That, and the fact that you’re close to UCF is another factor that could skew observations.
LOL at the Challenger being called American muscle when it’s assembled in Canada
Look at the combined sales of foreign sports coupes. That number would be a distant 4th. Remember when the Datsun Z-cars, Mazda RX-7’s and the Toyota Supra were the hot models to have? It is a real turnabout to see the foreign models so far down while the domestic models are selling at a decent pace.
