Modified 2020 Shelby GT500 Drag Races A Stock McLaren 720S: Video

We’ve seen the 2020 Shelby GT500 beat up on just about everything it has drag raced. One of the GT500 losses we did see was when the guys at DragTimes raced the 2020 Shelby GT500 against a Ford GT on an unprepared surface for a short distance. The DragTimes guys are back, and they are pitting the 2020 GT500 against a modified McLaren 720S.

The video shows that the McLaren was making 710 horsepower and was stock. The 2020 GT500, on the other hand, is listed in the video title as being modified. According to the video, the car has an exhaust, tune, and intake with unspecified horsepower. Both the Shelby and the McLaren are using the same Toyo R888R tires.

The two cars line up and have at it down the quarter-mile. For those who care, the temperature during the race was 80F, and the density altitude was 1,800 feet. The cars raced three times, and on the first race, the Mustang missed a shift, how that happens with a DCT we don’t know. The McLaren rocketed away from the GT500. The times were 9.943 for the McLaren and 11.566 for the GT500.

Race two lined up, and the McLaren again held the lead the entire length of the track, pulling away from the GT500. The Mustang did have a clean run with no missed shifts. The GT500 never had a chance. The McLaren went 10.037 compared to the GT500 10.544. Race 3 saw the GT500 jump the gun, but the McLaren was too much and dominated the race again despite the Mustang early lead. It’s also worth noting that the yellow Ford GT owned by DragTimes is probably going up for sale. He said he was coming up on the two-year ownership mark, and with the prices the cars were selling for, he would probably sell.

Shane is a car guy with a fondness for Mustangs and off-roading.
