We’ve seen the gang from DragTimes racing their Ford GT in various events from half-mile races to drag races against 2020 GT500 Mustang. The time out, the yellow Ford GT with black stripes is heading to the autocross. For those unfamiliar with an autocross, it’s a small version of a road racing course with turn markers indicated by cones.
The challenge of an autocross course isn’t high-speed’s, it’s handling, and the ability to make it through the narrow confines of the course the fastest without getting lost and without hitting cones. Anyone who’s ever done an autocross will tell you the fastest car does not always win. The average autocross tends to be the domain of vehicles like the Mazda Miata.
This particular autocross is vastly different from most events of the sort in that it’s set up for much higher speeds. The driver of the GT says that some people were hitting nearly 90 miles an hour, which is very fast for an autocross. The GT will also get pitted against a Tesla Model 3, which sounds like a weird comparison.
We particularly enjoyed the video footage of the GT racing against a racing drone at the autocross; the footage from the air is very impressive. If you don’t care a thing about autocross, it’s at least cool to hear the GT scream. I will say that as a person who has experienced multiple autocrosses over the years, this is more like a very short road course event that appears to be set up on a go-kart track. It’s nothing like your standard autocross. That said, it’s a fun video to watch, and it’s worth checking out.
