The NHRA Facebook page has shared a very cool video of one of the Cobra Jet Mustang cars that races various NHRA events. The segment is called Attention In The Pits, and the Cobra Jet Mustang that we see in the video is the School of Automotive Machinists & Technology Factory Stock Showdown Mustang driven by Drew Skillman.
Those unfamiliar with NHRA drag racing may not know Drew Skillman, but he is the reigning SAMTech.edu Factory Stock Showdown champion. At a recent event, Skillman gave NHRA announcer Joe Castello a chance to get up and close and personal with his Cobra Jet. This particular Mustang isn’t running the factory for the engine; it uses an engine built by another racer named Chris Holbrook.
The engine is certainly a work of art with what appears to be a massive supercharger bolted on top of it and blue valve covers. The video goes over some details on the racing car and shows various aspects of the interior and exterior. One of the most interesting things about this particular racing car is that it is not a factory Cobra Jet.
Skillman says that they pulled the car out of the factory early last year because Ford wasn’t going to have production cars ready in time for the season. Skillman says that Ford gave them all the parts to build the car, and they constructed it themselves. The car still has features inside that would have come in it from the factory, such as power windows, power locks, and seats, are still included per the rules of the class. Anyone wanting to get into that sort of racing can still buy factory Cobra Jet Mustangs, we saw one not long ago on eBay that included an extra engine.
