Competitive Sales Comparison

Lincoln Nautilus sales volume results in the United States put the nameplate in eighth place in its competitive set in Q4 2019, down from seventh place in Q3. This puts the Nautilus behind the segment-leading Lexus RX, BMW X3/X4, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Audi Q5, Acura MDX, and Cadillac XT5 (see Cadillac XT5 sales), which is followed by Volvo’s XC60. The Nautilus outsold two remaining models in its segment, including the Infiniti QX50 and Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

The D-crossover segment expanded 1 percent to 146,890 units in Q4 2019. As such, Lincoln Nautilus sales outpaced the segment significantly during Q4.

It’s worth noting that Lexus RX sales figures include those of the regular RX, which is a direct rival to the Nautilus, as well as that of the RX L, which is more of a three-row rival to the upcoming Lincoln Aviator.

But even when adding together sales of the Nautilus and Aviator, the Lexus RX still outsells the two Lincoln crossover models more than two-fold.

The Ford Authority Take

Despite placing in the second half of its pack by sales volume, Lincoln Nautilus sales again outpaced the segment by a significant margin during the final quarter of 2019, just as it did throughout most of the year.

We attribute the circumstance to renewed consumer interest in the refreshed Nautilus over the MKX. While no MKX sales were reported according to our data, it’s still possible that heavy incentives of the outgoing MKX could have also contributed to the noteworthy sales spike.

Note that Ford Motor Company is bunching sales of the MKX and Nautilus into a single line item.

Frankie's first favorite car was a 1968 Ford Mustang, and he's had a strong appreciation for the nameplate ever since. Later in his youth he became infatuated with Eleanor, thanks to Nicholas Cage's stellar performance. Frank's a real jokester, too.

  1. It appears that the NAUTILUS is now the foundation for hearses and longer limousines. Much like the XT5 is for GM.

  2. I’m curious about the Acura representation in this competitive set. The RDX is the Acura 2-row crossover that actually has more interior room than a couple of the German vehicles on this list while the MDX is a 3-row crossover. Why isn’t the RDX included in place of, or in addition to, the MDX?
