iPad fans have probably thought from time to time that it would be very cool to have an iPad mounted on the dash of the car. For those with new vehicles that have Apple CarPlay, this might not be much of a dream, but it might be desired by those with older vehicles that lack CarPlay capability. Enter Soundman Car Audio, which installed a 12.9-inch iPad Pro in the dash of a 2015 Ford F-150 pickup.
The 12.9-inch iPad Pro is a seriously large tablet to be placed in the dash of a pickup, but doing so required considerable modifications to the vehicle dash, including the relocation of the traction control and hazard switches to a new panel below the iPad. A custom audio control knob was also added that will control the volume of the audio system.
The installer does say that all the OEM equipment was left on the panel, including factory AC controls. It appears that the iPad is charged while docked, and the Ford F-150 iPad is removable to prevent theft, and it
The company sells iPad dash kits for various vehicles, but it’s unclear if the panel being built in the video was completely custom or one of the standard offerings. It does appear that the factory stereo system is completely replaced by the iPad meaning no local radio other than via an app. The install would allow the use of streaming media from Spotify or any other streaming company, offering more variety than the local radio stations might offer. Unfortunately, the video doesn’t show the actual installation of the iPad dash kit.
