U.S. Ford Motor Company Sales Decrease 12.5 Percent In First Quarter 2020

Ford Motor Company sales decreased by 12.5 percent to 516,330 units during the first quarter of 2020 in the United States, amid the nation’s outbreak of coronavirus and multiple state stay-at-home orders. Sales decreased at the Ford brand, while increasing at Lincoln.

“At Ford we feel a deep obligation to step up and contribute in these unprecedented times. Our dealers and employees have jumped into action to support healthcare workers, their communities and millions of our customers”, said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “Our Ford team is working around the clock on everything from building healthcare equipment, assisting our dealership network and providing our customers peace of mind through deferred vehicle payments. I have never been more proud of our team,” he added.

FoMoCo Sales Notes – U.S. Q1 2020

Sale types:

  • Total Ford Motor Company sales during Q1 2020 decreased 12.5 percent to 516,330 units
    • Ford did not provide any information on retail vs. fleet deliveries, a significant departure from the way it reported previously (on a monthly basis)

Ford and Lincoln dealers are also responding to the crisis with countless acts of community support, hygenic cleaning processes and innovative sales and service processes to safeguard employees and customers, including remote sales and pick-up and delivery services.

  • Ford did not provide inventory or SAAR information, representing a notable change in the details provided by Ford for its sales reporting

Brand & Model Sales

Ford sales decreased 13 percent to 490,769 units:

  • Ford EcoSport sales increased 0.34 percent to 12,923 units
  • Ford Edge sales decreased 4.27 percent to 29,599 units
  • Ford Escape sales decreased 20.73 percent to 48,117 units
  • Ford Expedition sales decreased 9.11 percent to 19,790 units
  • Ford Explorer sales increased 5.64 percent to 56,310 units
    • Explorer begins the year as America’s best-selling midsize SUV
    • Q1 retail sales of the all-new Ford Explorer increased 10.5 percent, while Explorer ST retail sales gained 32 percent year-over-year
    • Double-digit retail sales growth took place in many parts of the country, including the Great Lakes, central and coastal regions
  • Ford F-Series sales decreased 13.07 percent to 186,562 units
    • F-Series began the year as America’s best-selling vehicle
    • The 13.1 percent decline is explained by the timing of company’s fleet sales and weaker retail sales in March due to coronavirus
    • Ford says that stock levels are well positioned at the end of Q1 despite plant closures due to the coronavirus outbreak
  • Ford Fiesta sales decreased 82.92 percent to 2,723 units
  • Ford Flex sales decreased 55.64 percent to 2,465 units
  • Ford Fusion sales decreased 11.39 percent to 36,937 units
  • Ford GT sales decreased 5.96 percent to 79 units
  • Ford Heavy Trucks sales decreased 47.89 percent to 1,716 units
  • Ford Mustang sales increased 6.81 percent to 18,069 units
    • Sales of the GT350/Shelby GT500 doubled year-over-year
  • Ford Ranger sales increased 122.69 percent to 20,980 units
  • Ford van sales were up 5.7 percent in the first quarter on total sales of 54,499:
  • Ford brand SUV sales are off 12.7 percent amid the coronavirus shutdown

Lincoln sales increased 2 percent to 25,561 units:
