U.S. Ford Motor Company Sales Decrease 33.3 Percent In Second Quarter 2020

Ford Motor Company sales decreased by 33.3 percent to 433,869 units during the second quarter of 2020 in the United States, amid the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. Sales decreased at the Ford brand and also Lincoln.

“Our performance in Q2 was really driven by Ford and our dealers’ deep commitment to customers and quick action taken to support our customers during these unprecedented times,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “Our support programs continue with our recent introduction of ‘Ford Promise’ to provide extra security during these difficult times. It’s another way Ford is standing with hard-working Americans,” he added.

FoMoCo Sales Notes & Highlights – U.S. Q2 2020

Sales types:

  • Total Ford Motor Company sales during Q2 2020 decreased 33.3 percent to 433,869 units
    • Ford did not provide any information on retail vs. fleet deliveries, a significant and notable departure from the way it reported sales previously (on a monthly basis)
  • F-Series Q2 2020 overall sales totaled 180,825 pickups, while expanding its retail share of the segment, with an estimated 2.6 percentage point increase in retail share
    • With more than 33 percent of the retail full-size segment, F-Series expands its lead as America’s best-selling pickup

  • Ford did not provide inventory or SAAR information, representing a notable change in the details provided by Ford for its sales reporting

Brand & Model Sales

Ford sales decreased 33.9 percent to 412,588 units:

  • Ford E-Series sales decreased 49.81 percent to 5,802 units
  • Ford EcoSport sales decreased 19.88 percent to 17,232 units
  • Ford Edge sales decreased 36.81 percent to 21,052 units
  • Ford Escape sales decreased 49.34 percent to 36,680 units
  • Ford Expedition sales decreased 42.4 percent to 12,555 units
  • Ford Explorer sales increased 26.76 percent to 44,839 units, bucking industry trends
    • These figures include Ford Police Interceptor Utility
    • Explorer’s estimated retail share of segment totals more than 17.5 percent, representing almost 6 full percentage points of gain in retail share over a year ago
    • High-performance ST represented 20 percent of Explorer’s retail sales mix
    • Though the first six months of 2020, Explorer leads as America’s best-selling midsize SUV with sales of 101,149 vehicles.
  • Ford F-Series sales decreased 22.65 percent to 180,825 units
  • Ford Fiesta sales decreased 98.04 percent to 434 units
  • Ford Flex sales decreased 76.6 percent to 1,686 units
  • Ford Fusion sales decreased 55.21 percent to 24,484 units
  • Ford GT sales decreased 64.71 percent to 18 units
  • Ford Heavy Trucks sales decreased 73.42 percent to 1,552 units
  • Ford Mustang sales decreased 27.32 percent to 15,717 units
    • Retail Mustang market share jumped more than 8 percentage points to 43 percent of the sports car segment in Q2
    • Shelby GT350 and GT500 sales shot up 20 percent
    • Mustang retail sales remain strong, posting a 5.4 percent retail sales gain over a year ago
  • Ford Ranger sales increased 19.77 percent to 25,008 units
  • Ford Transit sales decreased 56.52 percent to 17,944 units
    • Transit gaining almost 1 full percentage point of retail share of the full-size commercial van segment
    • Transit continues as America’s bestselling van through the first half of 2020. While overall Ford van fleet sales are down, Ford made retail share gains in Q2
  • Ford Transit Connect sales decreased 38.06 percent to 6,760 units

Lincoln sales decreased 18 percent to 21,281 units:

  • Lincoln Aviator sales totaled 4,016 units
    • Aviator continues to deliver strong incremental share growth for the Lincoln brand, representing 10 percent retail share of the large premium SUV segment
  • Lincoln Continental sales decreased 32.08 percent to 1,012 units
  • Lincoln Corsair sales totaled 5,463 units
    • Corsair retail share increased to more than 8.5 percent of the premium small SUV segment in Q2
    • These figures include those of the outgoing Lincoln MKC
  • Lincoln MKT sales decreased 98.39 percent to 20 units
  • Lincoln MKZ sales decreased 36.14 percent to 2,985 units
  • Lincoln Nautilus sales decreased 38.49 percent to 5,036 units
  • Lincoln Navigator sales decreased 37.34 percent to 2,749 units
  • Lincoln’s newest SUVs – Aviator and Corsair – lift Lincoln SUV retail share by an estimated 1.5 percentage points in Q2.

During the first six months of the 2020 calendar year, Ford Motor Company sales decreased 23.4 percent to 950,199 units.
