Ford Ranger Is The Best-Selling Used Vehicle In South Africa

The used vehicle market is on fire these days as inventory continues to shrink while demand remains strong. That’s particularly true in South Africa, where 65 percent of the total vehicles sold are used. And in that space, the Ford Ranger has asserted its dominance in the 2020 AutoTrader Car Industry Report, which notes that the mid-size pickup was the best-selling used vehicle in South Africa from July 2019 to June 2020.

Overall, the Ford Ranger represented 4.7 percent of all used cars sold in South Africa and generated 8.3 million searches in the aforementioned period. The Ford Ranger is consistently one of the best-selling new vehicles in the country, and this accolade complements and completes Ranger’s overall value offering in the market.

The Ford EcoSport and Ford Fiesta also finished in AutoTrader’s top 10 used car sales rankings, with the EcoSport being the only compact sport utility vehicle to make the cut. In addition to just ranking used vehicle sales by model, the 2020 AutoTrader Car Industry Report provides insight into which makes, models, and variants (including trim levels) are important to car buying consumers.

“The top-selling used Ranger derivative is the 2.2L TDCi Double Cab Hi-Rider XL. It is the most popular Ranger by far. It retails for an average selling price of R260,673 ($15,000), the average mileage is 90,596 kilometers (56,293 miles), and the average year of registration is 2015. The Ranger is especially popular in Gauteng, with that province representing 55 percent of total Ranger sales, while the double cab is the most popular body type, accounting for 68 percent of sales,” said George Mienie, AutoTrader CEO.

The Ranger’s success in South Africa can be attributed to a number of factors, according to Eben Swart, Ford Approved manager at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA). “I believe it’s a combination of the Vehicle Loaner Program getting customers to drive our Rangers when their vehicle is in for repairs, and dealers doing more for their customers,” he said.

“In addition, FMCSA’s holistic Consumer Experience takes a cross-departmental and cross-functional approach to ensure that customers have the best vehicle ownership experience. The engineers at the Ford Silverton Assembly Plant are also committed to delivering vehicles with the highest overall quality.”
