Lincoln Nautilus Was 8th Best-Selling Model In Segment During Q2 2020

Lincoln Nautilus sales fell in the United States, Canada and Mexico, while increasing in South Korea during the second quarter of 2020.

Lincoln replaced the MKX with the Nautilus in 2019, in conjunction with the midcycle refresh. Availability of both models continues to overlap in some international markets as dealers sell out the remaining MKX inventory and transition to selling the Nautilus. For this reason, our figures include both Nautilus and MKX results.

In the United States, Lincoln Nautilus deliveries totaled 5,036 units in Q2 2020, a decrease of about 38 percent compared to 8,187 units sold in Q2 2019. Note that for the U.S. market, FoMoCo is combining sales of the MKX and Nautilus into a single line item.

In the first six months of the year, Nautilus sales decreased about 36 percent to 10,281 units.

Competitive Sales Comparison

Sales results of the Lincoln Nautilus in the United States puts the nameplate in eighth place out of ten rivals in its competitive set in Q2 2020, behind the segment-leading BMW X3 and X4 (which made up a cumulative 10,833 units), Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Audi Q5, Cadillac XT5 (see Cadillac XT5 sales), Acura MDX and Volvo XC60. The Nautilus outsold the two remaining models in its segment – the Infiniti QX50 and Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

It’s worth noting that Lexus RX sales figures include those of the regular RX, which is a direct rival to the Nautilus, as well as those of the RX L, which is a three-row model that is rivaled by the Lincoln Aviator.

The Ford Authority Take

After a strong performance throughout the 2019 calendar year, the Nautilus’ sales performance in the first half of 2020 fell significantly due to the COVID-19, which resulted in Ford idling production across the Americas.

Additionally, the pandemic saw substantially reduced purchase-related interactions due to stay-at-home orders, along with reduced spending power as a result of negative financial impacts brought about by the pandemic.

We’re interested in seeing how Lincoln Nautilus sales perform once coronavirus-related impacts either go away entirely, or subside to minimal levels.

Ford Motor Company Q2 2020 sales reports:

Frankie's first favorite car was a 1968 Ford Mustang, and he's had a strong appreciation for the nameplate ever since. Later in his youth he became infatuated with Eleanor, thanks to Nicholas Cage's stellar performance. Frank's a real jokester, too.

Lincoln needs to step up its game on all the SUV including the Nautilus, since that’s all the brand is selling in the future. Small upgrades would help the outside Continental doors handles on all Lincoln models, maybe it’s the name who came up with Nautilus from MKX? Why not Lincoln Mystique…

Now that an announcement is made that this product will be discontinued down the road, future sales will suffer .

To clarify – Lincoln and Ford do not talk about future products or future plans surrounding products.

What we do have is a throughly-researched report from Ford Authority that states that it will be dropped in 2024:
      https://fordauthority.com/2020/08/lincoln-nautilus-production-to-end-in-july-of-2024/

However, it’s not an official announcement, per se.

Just wanted to make that distinction.

That said, very few people follow the industry as closely as we do… and most are unaware of the plans to discontinue this vehicle in a few years… so the impact on sales should be minimal.

Apparently, it is more important to the bean counters at Ford that the Oakville plant be closed than continue the successful Edge and Nautilus.
