2020 Ford Explorer Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the 2020 Ford Explorer its Top Safety Pick+ award for vehicles built after May 2020. The Top Safety Pick+ is the Institute’s highest safety award, with criteria that includes six crashworthiness tests as well as ensuring minimum “acceptable or good” headlight ratings on vehicles that must come equipped with advanced driver-assist technologies that can help avoid or reduce a collision.

The Ford Explorer earned the highest rating of “good” in every crashworthiness category, including both driver- and passenger-side overlaps, moderate front overlap, side, roof strength, and heat restraints and seats. All front crash prevention systems earned top ratings as well, while headlights and child seat anchor ease of use were rated as “acceptable.”

The Top Safety Pick+ award was created in 2013 as a way for the best-performing vehicles that attain Top Safety Pick status, which has been around since 2006, to further distinguish themselves from the competition.

The 2020 Ford Explorer features the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of driver-assist features as standard equipment. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recognized the Explorer in both its vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations, as well as its ability to protect its occupants in the event of a crash.

The full suite of Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assist features on the 2020 Ford Explorer include the following:

  • Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking including Pedestrian Detection
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Dynamic Braking System
  • Blind Spot Information System
  • Rearview Camera
  • Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane-Keeping System
  • Auto High-Beam Headlamps

“Explorer is America’s all-time best-selling  SUV and with that, our customers expect it to take their family on adventures everywhere – from school to our national parks,” said Lee Newcombe, Explorer marketing manager, Ford Motor Company. “This honor from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reaffirms the obsession of our entire team who work tirelessly toward the goal of helping our customers arrive at these places and everywhere else in between.”
