2021 Ford F-150 Bed: First Look

The all-new, 14th generation 2021 Ford F-150 just entered production yesterday, and will begin arriving at dealerships in November. But we don’t have to wait that long to see the 2021 Ford F-150 bed area, because Ford Authority was recently able to get an up close look at the new Ford F-150‘s bed and all of its key details.

First of all, it’s worth noting that even though the 2021 F-150 is all-new, many aspects of the bed area remain unchanged from the current, 13th gen pickup. That includes the basic bed design, as can be seen in our side-by-side comparison below. The current-gen pickup in our comparison has an aftermarket tonneau cover and carpeted bed mat, but it’s clear that every last detail here is otherwise unchanged.

The same can be said for the tailgate step, which is exactly the same in the 2021 F-150 as the outgoing pickup. There’s a square-shaped button in the center which, when pushed, allows the step to protrude from the tailgate. The user then pulls it out and down, and a grab assist handle also retracts and locks into place to aid ingress and egress. There are two yellow buttons/tabs marked with a “1” and “2,” as before, which indicate the order they should be pressed in.

What separates the 2021 Ford F-150 bed from the old one are a series of brand new features. Every 2021 F-150 comes standard with cleats mounted to the sides of the tailgate to act as tie-down locations for extra-long items in the bed.

Additionally, new clamp pockets are built in to the tailgate of every truck, so customers can hold materials down for precision work. The optional flat Tailgate Work Surface also includes integrated rulers, a mobile device holder, a cupholder, and a pencil holder.

In addition to the Tailgate Work Surface, this particular pickup is also equipped with Ford’s new Pro Power Onboard system, which gives the 2021 F-150 generator levels of exportable power for work sites, camp sites, and everyday life.

Pro Power Onboard is available with a 2.0 kilowatt output on optional gas engines, while PowerBoost-equipped F-150 models come standard with 2.4 kilowatts of output or an optional 7.2 kilowatts of output.

Power is accessible through in-cabin outlets and up to four cargo bed-mounted 120 volt 20 amp outlets, with a 240 volt 30 amp outlet on the 7.2 kilowatt version. The system even provides power on the move to charge tool batteries in between jobs.

So while the 2021 Ford F-150 bed is largely unchanged in terms of design, there are a couple of new notable and functional features present.

  1. Now the design on the tailgate and bed of the new ford is just what guys and us vets need for work,every day use and camping for sure if i ever had time and funds if i could even afford such a nice truck with all them extras

  2. It’s pretty difficult to improve the design of a box, it’s still has five sides, but getting my first and only PU in 2012, you cannot have enough tie downs. Ones welded at the factory are low and in the corners of my Silverado and sometimes difficult to reach. I used after market tie downs that go into the stake pockets and work real well. Now that Ford is adding more tie downs, most new truck buyers may not realize how this little part can be so significant for safety. Volunteering at a food pantry, every Monday I was bringing 200 lbs of flatten cardboard boxes to the recycling center. Tie downs were essential.
    Florida has laws about truck beds that must be covered with a tarp when hauling materials and it is enforced especially on commercially used PU’s. Even at the recycling center it is signed that debris must be covered. Good move by Ford.
