Competitive Sales Comparison (U.S.)

The impressive increase in Ford Expedition sales volume during the third quarter of 2020 enabled the full-size SUV line to maintain its position as the second best-selling model in its segment, behind the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban.

To note, the “regular” Expedition is a rival to the Tahoe, while the extended-length Expedition Max goes up against the Suburban. Treating the Tahoe and Suburban as one vehicle, the way Ford does the Expedition and Expedition Max, gives Chevrolet 30,669 combined deliveries, nearly 11,300 more than the Ford (see running Chevy Tahoe sales and Chevy Suburban sales).

The Expedition outsold the remaining segment contenders, including the GMC Yukon family (see running GMC Yukon sales). The Ford offering also outsold the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia by significant margins.

The full-size luxury SUV segment contracted 17 percent to 70,646 units in Q3 2020, meaning that the Expedition outperformed the segment average.

The Ford Authority Take

The 4 percent increase in Ford Expedition sales volume is welcomed news, given just how lucrative the vehicle is to FoMoCo’s bottom line. It’s also welcomed news to see the vehicle post an increase while all other contenders were in the red.

We believe that growing demand in utilities, the Expedition’s competitive edge from a product standpoint, along with ample availability of the vehicle at the retail (dealer) level allowed the Expedition to make the impressive gains, enabling Ford to chip away at GM’s dominant position in the space with the Tahoe/Suburban and Yukon/Yukon XL. However, complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have stifled sales of the entire auto industry, and have halted the momentum that Ford Expedition sales started to build.

Additionally, General Motors is now in the process of launching its all-new full-size SUVs – the 2021 Tahoe, 2021 Suburban and 2021 Yukon. The SUVs are significantly more competitive than their predecessors, offering an independent rear suspension, more interior room, an optional diesel engine and various other new features, all of which pose a threat to the Expedition in the near-term. To that end, Ford is working to refresh the Expedition that is expected to launch for the 2022 model year. The updated model will make The Blue Oval’s offering more competitive.

  1. I bought a 1997 used, one owner Expedition with 87,000 miles. I have NEVER enjoyed driving a vehicle as much as with the Expedition. Smooth, powerful, and roomy.
