2021 Ford Explorer Launch Timeframe

As of this writing, the 2021 Explorer is available at the retail level, as the Ford Chicago Assembly plant has been producing the three-row since late 2020, although output at the facility has been significantly hampered by the ongoing microchip shortage. As Ford Authority previously reported, The Blue Oval opted to reduce availability of paddle shifters and roof rails for 2021 model year Explorers. That said, the three-row crossover is set to gain some notable additions later this year, in the form of the Outfitters cargo management accessory bundles, rear-wheel drive Enthusiast ST model, and the all-new Explorer King Ranch. An off-road oriented Explorer Timberline is on the horizon as well, although it is currently unclear as to when Ford will reveal the model.

The 2021 Explorer rides on the Ford CD6 platform shared with the 2021 Lincoln Aviator. Ford completely redesigned the Ford Explorer for the 2020 model year, representing the sixth-generation of the nameplate.
