Back in February, we spied an early 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline mule for the very first time. However, that model was clad in a considerable amount of camouflage and wore mismatched wheels, which made it difficult to discern many details about the more off-road focused SUV. Now, we have new pictures to share of a more advanced 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline prototype wearing far less camo, which gives us a much better look at the forthcoming model.
That includes not only the things that make the Timberline unique from the regular 2022 Ford Expedition but also features of the newly refreshed model, including its updated front end treatment, as well as a new taillight design, both of which we’ve reported on previously, along with the 2022 Expedition’s new and very large, vertically-oriented infotainment screen shared with the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
The 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline will join the Ford Explorer and possibly the Ford Maverick in FoMoCo’s soon-to-be-expanding Timberline lineup, as we recently reported. We expect many of the same features present in the Explorer Timberline to also make their way to the Expedition Timberline, including a slightly higher ride height, all-terrain tires (in this case, 265/70R18 Goodyear Wrangler Terrain AT/S rubber), and heavy-duty shocks.
The Explorer and Expedition Timberline also feature unique front and rear fascias that improve both approach and departure angles, along with skid plates to protect vital drivetrain components from damage while off-roading. Specially tuned shocks and stabilizer bars, a unique steering calibration, and an exclusive front rebound spring further aid off-road performance in the Explorer Timberline, and likely, the Expedition Timberline, too.
As we can see in these photos, the Expedition Timberline prototype also features red tow hooks, just like the Explorer Timberline, as well as a similar wheel design. The Explorer Timberline also employs a standard Torsen limited-slip differential, specialized LED fog lamps, a blacked-out Blue Oval in the front grille, and pre-wiring for Ford Performance branded auxiliary headlights, along with unique exterior and interior colors only available on the Timberline.
The 2022 Ford Expedition is expected to be powered by Ford’s 3.5L EcoBoost V6, which makes 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque in the current model. We expect Ford’s 3.5L PowerBoost V6, which debuted in the 2021 Ford F-150, to be available as an option. In F-150, the hybrid engine produces 430 horsepower and a 570 pound-feet of torque Meanwhile, Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission will be the sole transmission option for both engines.
We’ll have more on the Expedition Timberline soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for more Ford Expedition news and non-stop Ford news coverage.

I hope they’re putting a lower geared diff in these things. Especially if there’s no dual range
