Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

The increase in Ford Expedition sales volume during the first quarter of 2021 resulted in the SUV line remaining in second place in its segment, behind the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban.

To note, the “regular” Expedition is a rival to the Tahoe, while the extended-length Expedition Max goes up against the Suburban. Treating the Tahoe and Suburban as a single vehicle (the way Ford does with Expedition and Expedition Max) gives Chevrolet 34,181 combined deliveries, nearly 12,000 more than the Ford counterparts (see running Chevy Tahoe sales and Chevy Suburban sales).

The Expedition outsold the remaining segment contenders, including the GMC Yukon family (see running GMC Yukon sales), as well as the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia, In fact, Ford outsold its Japanese competitors by a significant margin.

It’s worth noting that five out of six models in the segment experienced growth in sales during the quarter, including the Expedition. However, the Ford entry posted the lowest increase in sales volume, allowing the GMC Yukon to begin closing the gap with the Expedition in terms of total sales volume.

Combining sales of all GM offerings in the segment – the Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon – gives Ford’s cross-town rival a 62 percent segment share, compared to 26 percent for the Expedition.

The full-size luxury SUV segment expanded nearly 16 percent to 84,537 units in Q1 2021. As we mentioned above, that means that the 12.5 percent growth in Expedition sales lagged the segment average.

The Ford Authority Take

The 12.5 percent increase in Ford Expedition sales during Q1 2021 gives the Expedition a healthy 26 percent share of the mainstream, full-size SUV segment in the United States. However, that share is down a single percentage point over Q1 2020.

We attribute the slight decline in segment share to the newer offerings from FoMoCo’s cross-town rival, General Motors, whose Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon (and Yukon XL) models posted higher growth rates than the Ford offering. To note, the  2021 Tahoe, 2021 Suburban and 2021 Yukon are all-new and have generally garnered positive critical acclaim.

Luckily, Ford is working on an updated Expedition that will launch for the 2022 model year. The refreshed model will feature revised front and rear fascias, along with a revamped cockpit.

A standout feature of the interior changes will be the addition of the huge, vertically-oriented display from the 2021 Mustang Mach-E and 2022 F-150 Lightning. See more on the 2022 Ford Expedition.

Ford Motor Company Q1 2021 sales reports:

Frankie's first favorite car was a 1968 Ford Mustang, and he's had a strong appreciation for the nameplate ever since. Later in his youth he became infatuated with Eleanor, thanks to Nicholas Cage's stellar performance. Frank's a real jokester, too.
