As many are acutely aware, some vehicles are far more accommodating to taller drivers than others. For those folks, driving a vehicle that is a bit cramped isn’t just an issue of comfort – it can also be a safety concern. That’s precisely why Consumer Reports recently evaluated a number of vehicles using its own hands-on testing, as well as data from its members, to determine which are the best for tall drivers, and the 2021 Ford Expedition took home top honors in the large SUV segment.
Consumers Reports took a number of factors into consideration in this study, including front-seat comfort, driving position, ease of access, and visibility. It then tabulated the results into composite scores, as is usually the case with each of its studies. What’s different about this one is that the organization focused solely on results from taller drivers.
“When judging cars, I pay particular attention to the balance of legroom, headroom, and comfortable reach to the steering wheel,” said Ryan Pszczolkowski, CR’s senior auto testing technician. “Having a steering wheel that can tilt and telescope makes a big difference.” Pszczolkowski also notes that while some vehicles may provide adequate space for taller drivers, they sometimes do so at the expense of rear passenger room.
The 2021 Ford Expedition is clearly not in that category, even if it has the benefit of being a large vehicle. The SUV scored a 4 out of 5 in front seat comfort, as well as a 5 out of 5 in rear seat comfort. Overall owner satisfaction remains high as well, coming in at 89 out of 100 for driving experience and 90 out of 100 for comfort.
These accolades are just the latest for the Ford Expedition, which earned CR’s “Most Satisfying Large SUV” honors earlier this year, as well as making Kelley Blue Book’s “Best Family Cars of 2021” list. Regardless, the refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition is posed to add a few styling updates, interior revisions, and technology features to Ford’s popular SUV, too.

Can confirm. 6’3” and feel like I’m in a cathedral. In comparison 2021 GMC Yukon feels more cramped.
