The 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline was revealed this past May as the most capable off-road version of The Blue Oval’s long-running crossover to date, and deliveries began in October. The Explorer Timberline is equipped with a host of unique exterior and interior features, is available in five different exterior colors, and features some upgraded mechanicals that set it apart from the rest of the Explorer lineup, including a special Carbonized Gray grille with space for off-road lighting. Now, the off-road light kit designed to fill that space is available to purchase from Ford Performance.
The 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline off-road light kit – part number M-15200K-EGL – retails for $499 and was developed exclusively for the Timberline. Since the crossover’s front grille was designed with this lighting in mind, installation is extremely easy and can be completed at a dealership or at home. The off-road light kit features an output of 160,000 candelas, which is 2.5 times brighter than the Explorer’s high beams.
The Explorer Timberline off-road light kit comes with two 10-inch LED lights, a bracket, and a wiring harness. The lights can be operated using the crossover’s auxiliary switch, located on the headlight switch, so owners don’t have to run additional wiring or install an aftermarket switch to turn them on or off. As one might imagine, the kit only fits the Timberline – not any other Explorer variant – due to its unique grille design.
Of course, the Explorer Timberline off-road kit is designed for off-road use only and is not intended for use on public roads. Considering how bright the lights are, they could present a bit of a safety issue for other vehicles on the road. But for those dark nights out on the trails, these LED lights would certainly prove to be a handy upgrade for those that intend to use their rugged Explorer the way Ford intended.
