Ford Design Boss Says Ford Focus EV Is On The Way

The refreshed 2022 Ford Focus was just revealed last month, bringing some styling revisions and updated tech features to the long-running model. However, while a hybrid powertrain is available, a Ford Focus EV doesn’t yet exist, even as the automaker plans on converting its entire passenger vehicle lineup to EVs in Europe by 2030. Of course, Ford produced the Focus Electric in limited quantities for a number of years, but now it appears that a new Ford Focus EV is in the works, according to Autocar.

“Everybody’s launching electric cars and we will launch a few in the future,” Chief Designer Murat Gueler told Autocar when asked if a Focus EV was in the automaker’s plans. “Definitely, we’re looking at everything – proportions, architectures…we’re really busy designing all the next-generation cars. There’s a lot of work going on.”

It’s unclear when, exactly, a Focus EV might join Ford’s lineup, particularly as the refreshed 2022 model prepares to launch in Europe. But if the Focus is destined to live on as the automaker converts to an all-electric lineup over the coming years, such a model is obviously inevitable.

In the meantime, the 2022 Focus lineup brings about a host of changes for the new model year, including a new hood design, a taller nose, a Blue Oval that’s been relocated from the front lip of the hood to the center of the upper grille, and standard LED headlights across the range. Additionally, all 2022 Focus models receive unique styling features that differentiate each one from the others.

The 2022 Focus powertrain lineup consists of Ford’s 1.0L EcoBoost Hybrid with 125 PS (123 horsepower) and 155 PS (153 horsepower) outputs, the 1.0L EcoBoost gas engine with 100 PS (98 horsepower) and 125 PS outputs, and the 1.5L EcoBlue diesel engine with 95 PS (94 horsepower) and 120 PS (118 horsepower) power ratings. Transmission options consist of a six-speed manual, seven-speed dual-clutch Powershift automatic, and eight-speed automatic.

Meanwhile, the high-performance ST is equipped with Ford’s 2.3L EcoBoost I-4, which produces 280 PS (276 horsepower) and 420 Nm (310 pound-feet) of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, while a seven-speed automatic with paddle shifters is also available as an option.

On the inside, the 2022 Ford Focus now comes equipped with SYNC 4, a new 13.2-inch infotainment screen, Ford Power-Up wireless software update capability, and a full suite of driver-assist features.
