Ford Vaccine Mandate Details For U.S. White Collars Revealed

Back in September, Ford asked its U.S.-based workers to submit their COVID-19 vaccination status, a process that was required for salaried employees, contractors, and agency workers, but optional for hourly employees represented by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. Just a couple of weeks later, the automaker announced that it would require all of its Canadian workforce to get vaccinated by the end of the year. As Ford Authority was the first to report, all of Ford’s U.S.-based salaried workers must get the COVID-19 vaccine by December 8th, though at the time, the details surrounding that decision were unclear Now, Ford Authority has learned from sources familiar with the matter exactly how the Ford vaccine mandate will work.

The Ford vaccine mandate applies only to white-collar workers – not hourly employees represented by the UAW. If those workers choose not to get vaccinated by the December 8th deadline, they could receive 30 days of unpaid leave with job protection. After that, those employees will be terminated.

Ford has not yet revealed when it will enforce the new rule for its Canadian employees and did not say how it would handle workers who choose not to get vaccinated. However, Jerry Dias, president of the Canadian union Unifor, previously said that those who refuse the vaccine “may be putting their jobs at risk. If they in fact refuse, and they are terminated, an arbitrator may very well uphold the termination. Workers need to know that.”

In the U.S., UAW President Ray Curry previously said that the union wasn’t planning on mandating vaccines for its 400,000 members, but also mentioned the union was awaiting updated OSHA guidelines regarding the new rules before taking action. OSHA has been tabbed to enforce a forthcoming mandate from the U.S. Department of Labor, requested by the Biden administration, that requires private employers with more than 100 employees to mandate vaccines or have unvaccinated workers submit to regular testing and wear a mask while on the job.
