The 2021 Ford F-150 represents the first year of the 14th generation model, an iteration that introduced a number of high-tech and innovative features into the full-size pickup’s repertoire. Chief among them is the all-new Ford 3.5L PowerBoost V6 – The Blue Oval’s first-ever electrified pickup powertrain. As Ford Authority previously reported, this new engine has already generated quite a bit of buzz, from helping out homeowners grappling with extended power outages to saving at least one wedding reception. And now, thanks to the automaker’s November 2021 U.S. sales data, it has become apparent that the PowerBoost is now an increasingly popular engine within the F-Series lineup.

According to the company, truck buyers scooped up 4,767 examples of the 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid last month. While that number may seem insignificant, it’s important to remember that Ford only provides a single figure for the entire F-Series lineup each month – a roster that includes both the F-150 and the Ford Super Duty. In that light, the fact that the hybrid accounted for nearly eight percent of the 60,418 units moved in November is a notable achievement and a sign that a substantial number of F-150 buyers are opting to pay thousands more for the powerplant, which is an extra-cost option available on all SuperCrew models.

Combined, the 2021 Ford F-150 and 2021-2022 Ford Super Duty currently feature eight engines within their respective lineups, five for the light-duty pickup, and three for the heavy-duty truck. As Ford Authority exclusively reported, The Blue Oval discontinued the Ford 3.0L Power Stroke V6 earlier this year. Given the popularity (or increased availability) of the PowerBoost, Ford likely isn’t regretting that decision, especially since the diesel engine could not be paired with one crucial feature: the Pro Power Onboard system, which is currently optional on every EcoBoost model and standard on the hybrid.
If anything, this recent figure likely represents a floor for F-150 hybrid sales, as consumers still consider the 2021 Ford F-150 over any other pickup when shopping for a truck. Additionally, professional automotive organizations have praised the PowerBoost for its utility and ample power, with WardsAuto putting the engine on its 10 best list. Given the overwhelming demand for the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, opting for the hybrid will probably be the quickest way to get into an electrified F-Series pickup as well, at least until Ford can scale up production on that particular model.
