The Ford Tourneo Custom – a passenger van version of the Ford Transit – was updated with new engine, transmission, and technology options back in the summer of 2020, at which time Ford also introduced a new, off-road focused Active variant as well. The Ford Tourneo Custom later landed on Britain’s best-selling vehicles list for 2020, joining the Ford Fiesta. Now, the Tourneo Custom continues to add to its trophy case after being named Autocar‘s Most Practical Vehicle of 2021.
The award is part of the UK-based automotive publication’s long-term test car awards, and this year, Autocar had 27 different vehicles in its fleet for comparison’s sake, with a wide variety of segments represented. In terms of practicality, it found the Tourneo Custom to be unbeatable, save for the fact that it found itself in a tie with the Skoda Octavia vRS Estate.
“This was another award that was always going to come down to two contenders: the famously practical big-booted Czech estate and a Ford Transit that has been converted into a plug-in hybrid people carrier,” Autocar said. “In the end, they couldn’t even be split on countback, so both take home a trophy.” Executive editor Rachel Burgess added that the Tourneo Custom “gives a better night’s sleep than even a Bentley,” which is high praise indeed.
In addition to its practicality award, the Tourneo Custom also scored “highly recommended” status in Autocar‘s “I would buy it” award, which highlights the vehicles that staffers would purchase with their own money. The Tourneo Custom couldn’t quite beat out the Dacia Sandero Stepway for top honors in that category, but road tester Richard Lane noted that the van is “impossibly practical.”
