The EV market is heating up quickly, but not only in terms of retail offerings – commercial fleets will soon have a number of options to choose from as well. That includes the forthcoming Ford E-Transit, of course, but also GM’s BrightDrop, which just secured additional EV van orders from Walmart and FedEx, as well as Rivian, which has a 100,000 vehicle order from retail giant Amazon. Another FoMoCo rival, Stellantis, just announced that it will transition Chrysler to an all-electric lineup by 2028 and is also working on a Dodge EV muscle car amid its big EV pivot. Now, the automaker has announced that it is also developing a Ram ProMaster EV, too.
Stellantis hasn’t yet released any pictures of the new Ram ProMaster EV, nor did it provide a ton of details about the future model outside of simply confirming its existence. However, the van will likely ride on the automaker’s new dedicated STLA Large platform, and Stellantis previously said that it was targeting a 300-mile range for its smaller EV cars, so we can play a little connect the dots here.
What is particularly interesting about this announcement, however, is the fact that Stellantis also revealed that Amazon is its first customer for the Ram ProMaster EV, which is expected to launch in 2023, meaning that it won’t be exclusively purchasing Rivian vans. The automaker and online retailer will collaborate on software solutions for the former’s new digital cabin platform – STLA SmartCockpit – starting in 2024. Stellantis has also chosen Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud provider for vehicle platforms.
Additionally, Amazon collaborated with Stellantis on the development of the ProMaster EV, incorporating last-mile delivery features as requested by the retailer prior to the van’s deployment in the U.S. Neither announced how many ProMaster EVs Amazon will ultimately purchase, but it expects to put “thousands” of these all-electric delivery vans on the roads in the coming years.
