Skid plates and other forms of underbody protection are standard fare on today’s off-road-focused vehicles, as those parts serve to protect the vital mechanical bits underneath that could be prone to hitting rocks and other obstacles. This includes the new 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline, which comes with standard front and rear skid plates, as well as fuel tank underbody protection. However, the optional transmission underbody shield available on the more rugged version of the refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition will be a late availability option.
The underbody shielding present on the 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline is unique to the model and is a $315 dealer-installed option. While many customers looking to purchase the new variant of Ford’s full-size SUV may not be terribly concerned about this delay, those interested in actually taking their Timberline off-road may find such an upgrade to be necessary, at least if they’re worried about damaging the transmission while out on the trails.
The 2022 Expedition Timberline – which was revealed alongside the regular model and the Stealth Performance Package back in September of last year – comes equipped with a host of upgrades that make it the most capable version of the Expedition to date, including 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler A/T tires, a wider track, 10.6 inches of ground clearance, Trail Turn Assist, and Ford’s 3.5L EcoBoost V6 H.O., which produces 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque.
As Ford Authority reported last year, the Expedition Timberline will only be available in the model’s standard length configuration – not the extended-length Max – and effectively replaces the outgoing FX4 Off-Road Package. The rugged SUV also received a price increase last November, while the rest of the 2022 Expedition lineup followed suit last month.
