The Ford 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 has been the focus of a number of performance-focused upgrade options in recent months, including a new intercooler from Livernois and a beefier short block from Ford Performance. With the engine’s tendency to develop cooling coolant consumption issues in some Focus RS models, it goes without saying that some owners might be looking for other upgrades to beef up the turbocharged powerplant, and now, Mahle has a solution in the form of a new PowerPak piston kit.
Mahle’s new Ford 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 PowerPak piston kit is designed to fortify an area that has been known to fail – the OEM cast piston. The aftermarket company’s 4032 alloy option adds some much-needed strength in that department for both stock and higher-horsepower builds, and also allows for a tighter piston to cylinder wall clearance for quieter cold starts. The pistons are also covered in Mahle’s GRAFAL anti-friction skirt coating and phosphate to prevent microwelding and pin galling.
These beefier pistons are constructed from a thick slipper skirt style forging and an enhanced OEM crown design to increase strength, with features including a 0.200″ wall thickness, 0.235″ top, and 0.200″ second ring lands, H13 tool steel wrist pins, and a hard-anodized top ring groove. The piston kit is designed for use with OEM 149.3 mm length connecting rods, OEM 22.5mm wrist pins, and an OEM 32.8mm compression height, with valve pockets and depth that can accommodate both the 2.0L and 2.3L EcoBoost heads with a 9.5:1 compression ratio.
Mahle’s new 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 PowerPak piston kit is available in either 87.51 mm (part #197937145) or 88.00 mm (#197937165) bore sizes and includes a Nitrided steel 1.2mm top, 1.2mm second, and 2.8mm oil ring set.
