In North America, law enforcement heavily favors the Ford Police Interceptor Utility – based on the Ford Explorer – which is available in a more fuel-efficient hybrid variant. In Spain, the Mossos d’Esquadra – the regional police of Catalonia – are now cruising around in Ford Kuga Hybrid patrol vehicles, yet another notch in the belt of FoMoCo’s highly successful electrified crossover that entered production at the Ford Valencia Assembly Plant in Spain a little over a year ago as diesels continue to fall out of favor in that region.
So far, Mossos d’Esquadra has taken delivery of 40 Ford Kuga Hybrid patrol vehicles, which are the very first electrified vehicles in the department’s fleet. Historically, it has favored vehicles produced in Barcelona, so that makes the Kuga Hybrid a natural fit, as those two cities are less than 200 miles apart.
The Ford Kuga Hybrid has been in high demand since it launched in Europe back in 2020, as more than half of the total number of Kugas sold there last year consisted of either the hybrid or the plug-in hybrid variant. At the same time, the latter was the best-selling PHEV in Europe in 2021, beating out the runner-up by an impressive 17 percent.
Meanwhile, electrified Blue Oval models continue to gain favor among European emergency services crews, as many are currently evaluating a Ford Mustang Mach-E police car prototype, while the North Rhine-Westphalia operates a fleet of 1,200 Ford S-MAX models, and the National Police have 675 S-Max units. Recently, Ford also scored a contract to provide the UK with 400 5.0-ton Ford Transit models to serve as a Protected Personnel Carrier over the next four years, too.
We’ll have much more on the Kuga soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for more Ford Kuga news and ongoing Ford news coverage.
