Pickup Truck Buyers More Receptive To Fully Electric Models Than Ever

While electric vehicles have been around for some time now, the EV pickup wasn’t really a thing until just a few months ago. Now, both the Rivian R1T and GMC Hummer EV have launched, and the Ford F-150 Lightning will join those models this spring, followed by other EV pickups like the Chevy Silverado and Sierra EV, as well as the Tesla Cybertruck. Regardless, converting traditional pickup truck buyers to EVs always seemed like a difficult task, but luckily for these automakers, it seems that those customers are more receptive to fully electric models than ever before, according to new data from CarGurus.

In Q4 of 2021, CarGurus surveyed 1,026 existing truck buyers on how they felt regarding EV pickups. The organization has been conducting this survey – which also includes questions about brands and prices regarding ICE-powered trucks as well – for four years now, giving us a decent amount of historical data to compare it to. This latest survey found that over the past year or so, consumer interest in EV pickups has risen sharply, though it still lags a bit behind all-electric cars.

Overall, 43 percent of current truck owners said they expect to buy an EV pickup in the next decade, which is up from 34 percent in 2020, compared to 52 percent of total vehicle owners. Broken down by demographic, the most interested group was Millenials – 50 percent of whom said they expect to purchase an EV truck in the next ten years, followed by Gen X at 45 percent, Gen Z at 39 percent, and Boomers at 37 percent.

Most of those surveyed – 48 percent – live in urban areas, with 47 percent residing in the suburbs and 29 percent in rural areas. In terms of the type of EV pickup owners are interested in, most – 52 percent – indicated compact pickups, followed by mid-size at 46 percent, heavy-duty at 43 percent, and full-size at 39 percent.

This is good news for FoMoCo, as the vast majority of early 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning reservations weren’t coming from traditional truck buyers. Most are also first-time EV buyers, though the all-electric F-150 was recently named one of the most considered electrified vehicles on the market as overall consumer interest in the model continues to grow.

  2. Here in these United States of America, we have a patriot at the helm of Ford and a patriot in the Oval Office, both of whom are committed to the future of America and its environment. Three of my family and I have the Lightning reserved, and they’ll convert to orders and then to sales. We already installed a dual charging station in the barn, and have Tesla batteries on order to charge during non-peak hours. We’re estimating a whoppin’ $5.00 to charge each vehicle.
If loving the United States of America, our fellow Americans, the land we live on and the future of it all is a fairy tale, then by all means: we’re happy to listen to future tales. Thank you, Patriots at the Blue Oval and the White House, for responding to interest and demand, and paving the way to a cleaner future for all of us!
