Back in June of 2019, a UK-based company called Charge Automotive revealed a pretty interesting concept at the Goodwood Festival of Speed – a 1967 Ford Mustang EV built using officially licensed body shells. A few months later, the company revealed more details about this electrified classic, including estimates that the pony car would do 0-60 in less than four seconds and achieve over 200 miles of range. Now, a couple of years later, the production version of Charge’s 1967 Ford Mustang has finally been revealed.
In terms of looks, Charge’s Mustang EV retains much of its original charm but has been modernized a bit with a closed-off front grille, LED headlights, flush-mounted door handles, Charge badging, and unique wheels, which enhance the vintage fastback design with a bit of a Shelby look to it.
The interior is a completely different animal, as it looks nothing like a 1960s Mustang or anything from that vintage, really. Instead, the modern cabin touts a large infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster, push-button shifter, three-spoke steering wheel, and heavily bolstered seats covered in a nice tan color to complement the black “double hump” dash and other components.
The bigger news, of course, is what powers this futuristic ride, and that’s two electric motors driving all four wheels and a 64 kWh battery pack that provides a combined 536 horsepower and 1,106 pound-feet of torque – a staggering number, indeed. Charge says that the electric pony car will do 0-60 in around 3.9 seconds, can achieve 200 miles on a single charge, and it’s also 50 kW DC fast charging capable.
As one might imagine, this vintage Mustang EV isn’t cheap by any stretch of the imagination, with a starting price of £350,000 (around $460k USD). The company will produce a mere 499 examples and is currently accepting reservations for the car, though no launch date has been set as of this writing.
