Ford Motor Company is recalling select 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid models due to an issue with the engine crankshaft.
The defect: in affected vehicles, the engine crankshaft may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can result in engine damage.
The hazards: in affected vehicles, the crankshaft surface finish was improperly polished. Improper surface finish can cause excessive friction and heat, resulting in premature bearing wear and engine knocking noise. If the vehicle is driven in this condition, it will lead to bearing failure or a broken connecting rod that may result in an engine stall, significant engine oil loss, and fire, increasing the risk of crash and injury.
Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.
Components: engine crankshaft.
Affected vehicles: select 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid models produced between April 6th, 2021, through May 17th, 2021, at the Ford Louisville Assembly Plant.
Number of vehicles affected: 155 vehicles.
The fix: dealers will inspect the crankshaft and replace the engine, as necessary, free of charge.
Owners should: wait for communications from Ford, which will begin on March 2nd, 2022. The Ford reference number for this recall is 22S10.
