Originally revealed way back in 2019, the Ford Escape PHEV was plagued by numerous delays after it was scheduled to launch in 2020. Production was been pushed back multiple times, first due to the Kuga PHEV’s stop-sale and recall in Europe and then because of supply issues stemming from the semiconductor chip shortage. However, the plug-in hybrid variant of the crossover finally launched in North America last September, and now, the 2022 Ford Escape PHEV is scheduled to arrive in Australia this spring.
“We are on track for the arrival of Escape PHEV in Q2 – and look forward to sharing more details soon,” a Ford Australia spokesperson confirmed to Car Expert. “We will confirm full specifications and pricing at the time of vehicle arrival.”
The arrival of the 2022 Ford Escape PHEV in Australia has been anticipated for quite some time now, as the model was originally slated to launch in that country in the second half of 2020. However, it will apparently be limited to ST-Line models only in that part of the world, according to Ford. “We are confident the Escape ST-Line PHEV strikes the right balance of features for Australian customers and have no plans for any other electrified variants to share at this stage,” the automaker said.
This isn’t the first time a Blue Oval product has faced a delayed launch in Australia, as the launch of the 2022 Ford Fiesta ST was recently pushed back by a few months. Meanwhile, the automaker currently plans to bring a total of five electrified models to that country by 2024, including the Escape PHEV and Ford E-Transit. The 2022 Ford Ranger is due to arrive there this summer in limited quantities as well.
In the meantime, Ford’s Aussie lineup has undergone a few changes in recent months, including the addition of gasoline particulate filters to quell emissions, as Ford Authority reported last month, while the front-wheel drive 2022 Escape ditched its multi-link rear suspension in Australia, too.
