The 2022 Ford Mustang lineup gained some intriguing new options and colors this year when compared to the 2021 model, including a revamped California Special Package and the reintroduction of the Grabber Blue paint option. As Ford Authority previously detailed, those two options are joined by the Coastal Limited Edition, Ice White Appearance Package, and the Stealth Edition Appearance Package in an apparent effort by Ford to keep pony car momentum going. Fortunately, our photographers recently spotted a superbly equipped specimen from this run: a Ford Mustang GT in Grabber Blue paint paired with the refreshed California Special Package.
While the 2022 Ford Mustang isn’t the first vehicle to be painted in Grabber Blue, the paint option officially returned this year, as the color seemingly disappears and reappears from The Blue Oval’s lineup at random. In any event, this particular pony car also sports the aforementioned California Special Package, which itself is no stranger to the Mustang lineup, although as always, it is only optional on GT Premium coupes and convertibles. That said, the package received some aesthetic alterations for 2022, including a new GT/CS logo clad in Race Red. Unfortunately, it seems the salty conditions on the ground in Michigan seemingly nullified the red logo on this particular model. What cannot be blunted is the prominent new front splitter, borrowed from the GT Performance Package, that comes standard on California Special models.
Side racing stripes are another staple of the 2022 Ford Mustang California Special Package, and this time around they run almost the entire length of the vehicle, something previous iterations did not do. Two sets of five-spoke Carbonized Gray wheels join the lineup too, with this model wearing the set that comes on examples without the GT Performance Package. As a matter of fact, the ability to pair the California Special Package with the GT Performance Package is also a newly introduced option and a change that will likely be celebrated by longtime Ford enthusiasts.
Out back, the red GT/CS logo escaped any negative interactions with road salt residue, and is thus more clearly visible than its counterpart. Unlike the latter logo, the performance rear wing is close by, another standard feature for the 2022 Ford Mustang when paired with the California Special Package, although those opting for the convertible can have it deleted, if desired. Although unseen, the California Special also gets Miko Suede door and seat inserts, special interior logos, and a “Carbon Hex” style aluminum instrument panel too. As Ford Authority detailed in February, production of the latest model has been impacted by the ongoing chip shortage, although several important options can once again be ordered.
