The all-new international market Ford Ranger was revealed last November with fresh styling and new tech features, followed by the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor, which was unveiled last month. Both of these pickups are set to launch in the U.S. next year, but the latter model will represent the peak performance variant of the mid-size model. However, both the Ford Edge and Ford Explorer have more on-road focused high-performance ST variants, while FoMoCo has previously refused to rule out an ST version of the Ford Maverick, too. And that had us wondering – even though it’s unlikely to happen (much like an ST version of the Ford F-150), what would a 2023 Ford Ranger ST look like?
The answer, we believe, would be something like these renderings. Our theoretical 2023 Ford Ranger ST features the same sort of upgrades one might find on any other ST model, including a lowered and specially-tuned suspension, larger wheels, sticky performance tires, and some body-color trim pieces to go along with a sport bar in the bed and the Ranger Raptor’s “Ford” script front grille.
It wouldn’t be terribly difficult to build a Ranger ST, since Ford could utilize the same 3.0L EcoBoost V6 present in the Explorer ST and Ranger Raptor, which cranks out 392 horsepower and 430 pound-feet in that guise, which flows to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. That powerplant would provide plenty of juice for a street-focused performance variant like the ST, without a doubt.
Unfortunately, that isn’t likely to happen, as most consumers these days are flocking to off-road-focused vehicles instead of pavement pounders. Regardless, it never hurts to dream of what could be, if FoMoCo wanted to make such a vehicle happen.
