The Edge accounted for 6 percent segment share, equal to that of the year-ago quarter. The Grand Cherokee claimed a massive 15 percent share, increasing five percentage points. The Explorer was close behind with 12 percent segment share, equal to that of the year-ago quarter. The Highlander also saw 11 percent of the segment, down two percentage points.
The mainstream mid- and full-size crossover segments, comprised of CUVs with a starting price point around $30,000, decreased nine percent to 495,806 units in Q4 2021, meaning that the Edge outpaced the segment average.
The Ford Authority Take
We attribute the decrease in Ford Edge sales during the quarter to sub-optimal availability of the vehicle as a result of constraints brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, increased levels of competition from new and overhauled entries, such as the Chevrolet Blazer, Honda Passport, Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Highlander and Venza, along with the new Jeep Grand Cherokee family, certainly didn’t work in the Edge’s favor during the final quarter of 2021.
Luckily, the 2021 Ford Edge is seeing various updates in the form of a significantly larger center screen and a revised transmission on the high-performance Edge ST model. As Ford Authority previously reported, the crossover has dropped its front-wheel drive configuration and will only be available with all-wheel drive for the 2022 model year. As a result, pricing for the crossover has risen roughly $2,000 across the board. The 2022 Edge also sees the addition of the Black Appearance Package.
The Ford Edge will not see a next generation after the current model runs its lifecycle, which is expected to be around the 2023 calendar year. In a move that was seemingly spurred by labor negotiations over the future of the Ford Oakville Assembly Plant, which currently builds the Edge for North America, The Blue Oval and the Canadian auto union, Unifor, came to an agreement that will see the facility retooled to produce five new EVs starting in 2025. The only way that we see the Edge continuing is as an electric vehicle.
